Have you ever noticed an Aldi and Lidl almost next door to each other?

At first, this might seem surprising. Both retailers operate in the discount supermarket segment and serve many of the same everyday shopping needs. Yet when you look at their store networks on a map, it becomes clear that their locations often overlap — sometimes with Aldi and Lidl stores just a few hundred metres apart.

Look around your own city or region and you may find Aldi and Lidl stores sitting surprisingly close together.

Store-location data can show where Aldi and Lidl stores are located and how close they are to one another. It cannot, by itself, prove exactly why a particular store was opened at a specific location. What it can do is make the geographic relationship between the two networks visible — down to individual stores..
